Not everything we've tried has worked on the first attempt. Our very first effort to support widows financially was a shared emergency fund, contributions pooled from members and well-wishers, available to any widow in need on request.
Within a few months, it was clear the open-request model wasn't working well. Without clear criteria for who could draw from the fund and how much, decisions felt inconsistent, some requests were approved quickly, others sat for weeks without a clear reason why, and the fund itself was depleted faster than contributions could replenish it.
That experience led directly to our current approach: individual home visits and a proper household register that lets us understand a widow's actual circumstances before deciding on support, rather than an open fund responding to whoever asks loudest or first. It was a frustrating way to learn the lesson, but a useful one.
